Are you hinting at the fact that we cannot be sure whether he was referring to ‘them’ (being lovers offscreen) as their characters vs. ‘them’ Courteney/Matthew?
If so, it’s a really a fun thing to think about. I always twist everything they say about themselves so that it turns into them being in a secret relationship. So when I saw that interview for the first time, to me, he was immediately hinting at THEM (as in Matthew/Courteney) being lovers ‘off-screen = in real life”, since apparently they always play lovers on screen.
But yeah, with Matthew it’s really funny because he always jokes around so nobody actually thinks he’s serious but I think all of that is just a way to let his true feelings show without being taken seriously.
It’d be so much fun if they had a thing going on and were hiding it. We won’t know for sure at this point of time, I guess.
