"Oh God. What am I gonna do?! He just would not stop asking me!"
Courteney was in the middle of a date and it was the worst she had had in a long time. She was currently hiding in the bathroom and on the phone to her best friend. The only one who managed to make her feel better even in the worst situations.
Matthew was chuckling on the other end of the line. He felt bad for Courteney, sure, but it also amused him a great deal.
"Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you before you agreed to go on that date, CC."
Courteney rolled her eyes as she glanced at her watch, her back pressed against the bathroom stall’s door.
"Yeah, yeah. But I have spent the past 10 minutes in the restroom and even though he is obnoxious as hell, I think he might be wondering where the hell I am," she replied, having no idea how to get out of the situation.
There was silence on the other end as Matthew was thinking.
"Well, I do know one way how to get you out of this situation…"
Courteney perked up at his words. “Oh God, please. No matter what it is, I beg you, please get me out of here.”
Matthew smirked to himself and casually grabbed his keys in one swift motion.
"Give me 20 minutes and I’ll save you. Bye."
Courteney had no idea how to get through another 20 minutes with such a horrible date, but she trusted Matthew. He had to get her out of here. How he was going to do that she still had no clue.

"… and then I just drove past her in my new Porsche and she was drooling all over me!"
Courteney faked a smile and gulped down the rest of her drink, giving her watch another glance. If Matthew didn’t show up within the next few minutes she would either get totally hammered or just leave without giving her date an explanation. Three hours had passed and the guy was still only talking about himself.
"Hey, honey…"
Matthew’s hands were all of a sudden on Courteney’s shoulders as she froze for a second, turning slightly in her chair to face him.
"Hey…. sweetie?" She looked at him quizzically, his hands now softly squeezing her shoulders.
"I’m so sorry I’m late, I just couldn’t get out of the office earlier. But I see you’ve had some company?"
It took her a few seconds to realise that he was pretending to be her boyfriend to get her out of there. As cruel as it was for her now shocked date, she had never been happier to see him.
"Uh… yeah. I… I have. Matthew, this is Liam, Liam, that’s my… uh… my-"
"Boyfriend," Matthew finished the sentence for her, looking smug.
For the first time this evening, Liam actually seemed to be interested in her. “Y-your boyfriend? But I… I thought…”
"That’s okay, Louis-"
"It’s Liam, actually…"
"Sorry, Liam," Matthew corrected himself before helping Courteney up and wrapping his arm around her small waist to pull her closer. "Looks like my girl here just needed something to do on her evening alone. Can’t blame a girl for wanting to go out and enjoy some dinner whilst dressing up, huh?"
Matthew didn’t even give Liam time to reply as he softly kissed Courteney’s temple in front of his eyes.
Courteney just smiled along and grabbed her purse.
"Sorry, Liam. But thanks for tonight, the food was just great," she leaned into Matthew and was more than ready to leave. With the one guy that truly cared about her. "See you."
And with that they both headed towards the exit and out of the restaurant into the cool autumn night.
Matthew made no move whatsoever to remove his arm from her waist as they walked for a little while, Courteney suddenly breaking out into a laugh.
"God, that was brilliant! Did you see his face?! I honestly can’t thank you enough for saving me," she smiled up at him now.
"No worries, honey," Matthew winked as he pulled her closer upon noticing that she was shivering.
Courteney smiled and buried her face in his side, breathing in his scent and enjoying the warmth of his body.
"So… you feel like spending the rest of the evening in the company of a guy who is much more interested in you than that Liam guy ever was?"
Courteney’s eyes met his and she couldn’t help but feel more wanted and loved than she had during all of her last few dates combined.
"That sounds excellent."
She put his hand into her big one and smiled as they walked past the restaurant again and to his car. The evening could still turn out to be better than she had expected it to be.
